Every year, Carroll County Chambers of Commerce in conjunction with Carroll County Public Schools hosts the Outstanding Teacher Awards. This year TEN of our very own teachers were nominated. Elizabeth Baldwin, Heather Brown, Nicole Flagg, Jerome Georgiana (a.k.a., “G”), Michael Jones, Ka’ren Murchie, Stacey Pickett, Robert Schilling, Judith Stewart, and Matthew Witte.
Overall, all our teachers were honored to be nominated.
“It is very humbling and an honor to be recognized as an outstanding teacher,” Mrs. Flagg stated.
Although it is an honorable and exciting experience, Mrs. Stewart said that “there are many outstanding teachers at Gateway, more than just those of us who were nominated!” Mr. Jones shared that sentiment by saying, “It is kind of embarrassing because there are so many deserving teachers that I feel like they should receive recognition, too.”
The teachers also do not know who or what they are nominated for. “It is always nice to receive recognition for the work we try to get done but we are not told who recommended us for the award. This means I kind of don’t know what I am being awarded for,” Mr. Jones added. It would be great if the teachers knew why they are being nominated so they could get recognition for what they are specifically doing well.
Being nominated is for the outstanding teacher award is a great honor and is a terrific way to show your teachers that they are doing an excellent job. There are other ways to thank a teacher as well. In this school, students can fill out a Teacher Griffin form. Unlike the anonymous outstanding teacher nominations, the Teacher Griffin informs the teacher what they did specifically to earn the award.
Keep an eye out for Outstanding Teacher nominations next school year. In the meantime, keep those Teacher Griffins coming!
