Have you ever wanted to see multiple grown adults absolutely wipe the floor with high schoolers at a sporting event? That is exactly what happened during the annual kickball game!
Spectators poured out of the building and sat on the grass around the kickball field to watch the students take on the staff. Some students watched, some didn’t, and some even pretended to be cheerleaders, all the while Ajax, Indigo Newman’s dog) was busy licking people’s water bottles. So, you know, students being students (and dogs being dogs).
Conditions were near-perfect for a kickball game. The clear sky and slightly warm temperature made it pretty comfortable for both players and onlookers.
However, as Mr. Banks reported, there were considerable gusts of wind. For the spectators, it wasn’t that big of a deal. But for the players, it was a different story. “With kickball, when you kick the ball in the air, the breeze blew the ball, so it was hard to judge the ball sometimes,” Mr. Banks explained. He later said that the weather was still good for the most part.
Nine staff members participated as well as 21 students. Before it started, students were hyping themselves up and smack-talking the staff throughout the day. After all, they did have the numbers advantage.
During the game, Mr. Witte, who pitched in college, tagged out multiple students. Mr. Banks had two double plays and a whopping three homeruns! The students gave it their all, especially William Conner and Brent Wall, who were considered to be the student MVPs.
Ms. Pickett remarked, “It was a lot of fun. I like going out and having fun with the kids and hanging out with them in a non-academic setting.” She added, “I told you so,” as she had told multiple students that they were going to lose that day.
The staff won 15-4. The students tried to make a comeback near the end of the game, but it was too little too late. If you’ve been here for a while, you’d know that the staff win… pretty much every time, so the outcome was not much of a surprise.
Will students ever win one of these matches? Mr. Banks commented, “I really feel like they have a chance. But they have to understand what goes into a game and what goes into winning.” He elaborated by saying that the students had the athletic skill needed, but it was just the communication holding them back.
Even though it’s competitive, it’s never that serious. All that matters is that everyone had fun. But that being said, who knows? Maybe one day the students will manage to win…
